Auscultation rules

Follow below rules when performing the auscultations:

1. Make sure you are in a quiet environment – turn off tv, radio, make sure there is no background speech etc.
2. Do not talk during the exam – both the patient and operator.
3. The stethoscope should be placed on bare skin.

Remember about below hints:

• Hold the device gently, avoid squeezing or rubbing its surface.
• Locate the correct points before putting the stethoscope on the patient’s skin.
• You can connect the headphones to listen to the live feed of the sounds that are being recorded.

Avoid the most common mistakes:

• Placing the statoscope on the thick clothing or multiple layers of clothing.
• Holding the device too tightly, tapping on the device, rubbing the device – it generates unwanted noises.
• Changing the hold of the device during recording.
• Changing the place on the patient’s body during the recording.
• Putting too much pressure against the patient’s skin.
• Not following the patient’s movements during breathing – the stethoscope moves on the skin or partially loses contact with the skin.
• Placing the stethoscope on the bones – sternum, collarbone etc.
